Apple Privacy Act and Facebook

With the development of social media platforms, tracking has been implemented more often without users being fully aware of it. Tracking contact lists, addresses, live locations and picture downloads has been used by the facebook market in order to provide better content and personalized advertisement. Creating thus a whole network system which surpasses user privacy.

The selling of personal information is nowadays performed by an information broker who sells personal data to big marketing companies such as Facebook and email platforms. With such information, the broker makes a profit and the social platforms then advertise to us in a personal manner, where our interests are exploited and targeted.

Personalized advertising works in such a way that all data collected is sent to an analytic board where advertising of your potential interest is sent your way. This way, if you looked in google “kayak paddles”, now you may start to receive kayak advertising and fishing gear. Another example could be: if you are always posting beach pictures, then bikini or swimming trunks advertisements will start popping in your emails and social media.

However, Apple Inc. has started a new update with the new IOS14 which detects tracking and blocks it right away to conserve personal data. Apple gives us the option to either allow or not allow information brokers to gather our personal data. This of course is a downturn to Facebook, who has its business model structured by data tracking. These two techno giants are now facing each other in the competing arena for business survival.

In my opinion, it is scary to know that all my personal info is being gather and sold to random individuals with different goals. Just the fact that that is even possible gives me a lot to think about. However, with IOS14, I feel that the rules of the game will change in our favor as customers.
